What is Ehlers Danlos Syndromes?

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) is the name given to a group of non-inflammatory hereditary conditions that impact the connective tissue, but can also impact the digestive system.

What Causes Ehlers Danlos Syndromes?

Connective tissue is a supporting structure in our body and is made up of a number of proteins including collagen, which is the protein most often thought to be involved in EDS. Collagen is abundant in skin, muscles, and ligaments which gives these structures strength and support. Changes in the collagen proteins, as in EDS, can make these structures stretchier and more fragile. Ehlers Danlos Syndromes is a genetic condition.

What are the Symptoms of Ehlers Danlos Syndromes?

Symptoms may vary depending on the type of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. EDS can impact the digestive system, with symptoms like:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Delayed gastric emptying
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders
  • Heartburn/reflux
